Dota 2 - Invoker (Kael) Guide

Invoker is, without a doubt, the best Dota 2 hero. Imagine, among all 115 choices, he is the only hero that has 10 abilities (that’s like six more skills compared to the majority of Dota 2 heroes). There’s a sense of entitlement that comes with being able to play this hero. You can literally feel gaining 10 IQ points the moment you pick him, and it almost requires you to laugh at the faces of those players who can’t even stun with Wraith King.
I’ve been playing Invoker since Dota 1 and he’s one of my most-played heroes in Dota 2. However, I noticed that there are some players who can’t enjoy the privilege of being able to play the best hero in the game because, apparently, he’s too complicated. Barring the Divine bracket, the Herald bracket is where Invoker is picked less than other skill groups.
Being the good Dota 2 player that I am, I devised a much simpler Invoker guide specifically for Herald players for them to know how it feels like to be superior.
(God’s Plan starts playing in the background.)

Early Game

Early game is when Herald players can relate to Invoker the most because this is when the hero is at his weakest. During this phase of the game, Kael’s lack of nuking abilities and low solo killing potential make inferior heroes like Shadow Fiend or Tinker stand a chance against his brilliance, but it’s okay since you can make up for these flaws by using the Wex + Exort skill build. `
Yes, the Wex + Exort skill build. It’s pretty much like the Quas + Exort except Herald players can save themselves from the need to micro a Forge Spirit. The high levels on the Wex and Exort reagents cause Alacrity to become an insanely good early game skill, as it makes last hitting and denying creeps as easy as being a bad Dota 2 player. For reference, Invoker can have better attack speed and damage against a Shadow Fiend with stacked souls without items at the same level.
If you manage to not die in the midlane, and maybe “secure” some kills with Sunstrikes, you can have enough gold for a Hand of Midas at the 12 minute mark of the game or even earlier. Build two Null Talismans for maximized damage output and health points, but if you’re matched against right-click heavy heroes like a brainless Phantom Assassin, Ring of Aquila can be a good alternative. Just don’t forget your Magic Wand and Infused Raindrop for burst magic damage heroes.

Mid Game

Mid Game is when Invoker become less akin to Herald players because this is the part of the game when enemies can no longer shrug off the effect of his skills. When playing Invoker, keep in mind the age-old quote about insecurities: “it’s not about the size of the sword, it’s how you use it.
Being a good Invoker player is not about how many skills you can Invoke in a short period of time, but how of much those invoked skills can actually contribute to your team’s win. Prioritize Chaos Meteor, EMP, Deafening Blast, and Ice Wall during team fights and use Tornado sparingly—this means that you shouldn’t use it after your ally Faceless Void caught three heroes inside a Chronosphere. It’s okay if you can’t execute these all at once, especially if you have your Herald medal as an excuse, just make sure that your spells hit the heroes you need to hit.
Your item progression, meanwhile, can be determined by asking yourself some few questions. Are you playing Invoker? Build Aghanim’s. Does the enemy team have hard carries that should be kited? Build Blink or Force Staff. Does the enemy team think that Invoker can be countered by silence? Build Eul’s then laugh at their faces for being pathetic. Did your enemies miraculously pick heroes with disables? Build BKB then run them down with your abilities. Are you originally a Divine player piloting your noob friend’s Herald account so you can feel accomplished? Build Hex, Octarine, and Refresher, then grow up.

Late Game

Late game is when Invoker becomes too powerful for Herald players because this is when the hero shines best. But that’s okay because if you followed everything in this guide so far, all you need to do at this point of the game is to destroy your enemies’ Ancient. Good thing Invoker is the best hero in the game and his massive arsenal allows him easily to take down towers with Forge Spirits and Alacrity, as well as clear waves with Tornado and Chaos Meteor.
This phase of the game is basically like early and mid game, except its easier. Just do everything that you did good: don’t die, cast your skills accurately, win teamfights, then push. That last part is the most significant because Herald players, as well as some players in the higher skill levels, tend to forget that the game is won by destroying the enemy’s team base, not by killing all of them over and over again.

Additional Tips

Memorize the invokelist as well as the effects of his abilities. Instill it in your mind, engrave it in your heart. Write it down on a special paper, put it under your pillow, and sleep on it. The mastery of the invokelist is the foundation of every good Invoker player.

Practice invoking spells. Whenever you see a keyboard, spam on those QWER keys and imagine your combos: WWQ+R+WWW+R+EEW+R+QWE+R+QQQ+R+WWE+R+EEE+R. Practice against bots. Practice it until you can do it even when you are asleep. Practice it until it looks like you’re playing the piano, but really, you’re just playing the best Dota 2 hero.
Quote Kenshiro from the Fist of the North Star whenever you cast Sunstrike. Shouting “omaewa mou shindeiru” upon enchanting Harlek’s Incantation of Incineration apparently increases the chance to hit by approximately 69%. Ain’t it nice?
Don’t forget the fundamentals. This goes for every hero in the game, but is most applicable for Invoker. Be aware about your last hits, your positioning, and the map. It’s okay to idolize Miracle- or Sumiya, but don’t rush to be like them.
Don’t practice in ranked matches. For the love of god. Please. Don’t.

If you followed everything in this guide and still didn’t win, you can always blame your team for not picking supports or not planting wards.
